I am a mom working in a business environment that revolves around technology and better business. I live in a house full of people petitioning, debating and whining for more technology with the latest and greatest updates. Sometimes, I sit back in amazement. I watch my 8 year old log into YouTube to look up the lyrics to her favorite Miley Cyrus song, so she can learn the words and memorize the lyrics. Later in the day, she is taping her favorite television show on Disney with the TV remote control. What? You can do that! Now I will never miss another episode of Grey’s Anatomy and Heros. Now I can sleep feeling fulfilled! If only!
MTV is a perfect example of mass media and the affects it has on popular culture. Everyday millions of impressionable teenagers watch a show called Total Request Live. This show has an average of four commercials for every eight minutes of programming it provides to the impressionable teenagers. Advertisements are for everything from acne medication, fast food restaurants, and clothing. It is estimated that MTV generates 21 million dollars a year from advertising revenues. Upon watching these advertisements the teenagers are almost tricked into buying what is hip or the...

How does technology impact the world I live in?
Where do I begin to explain? Technology has taken over, and the masses crave even more. This from a girl who has always feared the computer and the super highway! Well the super highway was constructed, and it runs right through my house. Three laptops, 2 desk tops, 6 cell phones (one an iPhone), 5 iPods, wireless internet and XBOX and the beat goes on. My kids can play for hours on the Wii, and my oldest plays XBOX with his cousins who live 5 states a way. They play together in real time screaming and laughing about their wins and losses on the wireless headsets.
My colleagues no longer go to networking events to exchange business cards and meet new people any more, they log on to various computer networking sites to share information, meet new professionals and even make friends. Can you believe people are even finding their match in marriage via online dating services? I even have a friend on eHarmony, trying to find Mr. Right. What happened to date night (dinner and a movie)? How about kids going to the arcade and sneaking notes in class? Now I get phone calls from the principle that my daughter’s cell phone was confiscated because she broke the rules and used the phone during class. Why? She was texting a message to her friend.
OK, so maybe technology isn’t a bad thing
Sometimes these great tools and products of technology make my life easier. I can travel for business and never need to worry about missing a wake up call again. I have a cell phone with an alarm. I can be anywhere in the country, and I can connect with my family and not miss a critical communication from work sent via email since I have a blackberry.
Everyday thousands of people log into the Social network Facebook and catch up with what is going on with friends and family around the world. This form of media allows people from all over the world to communicate and stay in touch with one another. This site is used more by people of all ages oppose to the site MYspace which is primarly used by teen and young adults.
